Fishermen working for fishermen

The Western Rock Lobster industry in Australia is a multi million dollar industry.

Formed in 1950, Geraldton Fishermen's Co-operative was formed by a small group of fishermen looking to cut out the middle man and create better returns for its suppliers. Over sixty years later Geraldton Fishermen's Co-operative is the largest Rock Lobster processor in the world and is responsible for supplying more than 60 percent of the western rock lobster caught from Western Australia. Each year we receive nearly 3000 tonne of lobster caught from the coast of WA

We export up to 90 percent of our products to various markets overseas, the main ones being China, Japan, Taiwan and the USA, and the rest is sold and distributed to leading supermarkets and wholesalers around Australia. Our annual sales are in excess of $140 million.

Geraldton Fishermen's Co-operative has depots and processing facilities spanning from Cape Leuwin to the Shark Bay. These facilities are used for the processing of lives as well as frozen, processing products such as Raw and Cooked Frozen, Splits, Tails and other various value added products.

The two brands to identify our product are

  • Brolos Brand
  • Kalbarri Brand

Why GFC

Because of our diverse product range, we can adjust our production plan in line with changes in global demand, an advantage we have over smaller operators, and an assurance that our fishermen will always get the best possible return on their catch.

We have long established export markets spanning across the globe, and our Brolos branded product has a renowned reputation as one of the finest quality Lobster products available in the market place.

As a member of the co-operative, your input into how the company is run is important to us. Shareholders elect directors to represent them and their best interests. Our aim is to maximise the return for our fishermen shareholders and continue to grow the business.

The co-op provides a range of services to its members including regular fortnightly payments, bulk purchasing of bait fuel and other supplies, pot brokerage and organising of fishing licenses.
